I Love My Country

On the eve of breaking news last night about Osama bin Laden's death, I just have to state how proud I am of our country and how wonderful America is.

We have our shortcomings and we have our blessings,
we have the leaders that shine and those who fall short,
we have tough times and good times,
we have freedom of speech and the will to fight,
we have brave souls who will sacrifice their lives for us,
and we have the American dream that never dies.

We are the United States of America.

God bless us, everyone.

  2. Seriously?

The scenes in the US have been the same as the scenes in the Middle East when they kill a western soldier or the like.

The west has killed one man - how many did his network kill in one foul swoop?

If the US managed to wipe out all terrorists then that would be a reason to celebrate and be proud, but until that happens the west needs to quit it's smugness and be on alert.

There have been 5 arrests in the UK today regarding terror and it doesn't take a genius to see that's on the back of Bin Laden.

When you've eradicated terror then we can all celebrate until then there's nothing to be proud of.

‎"I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." ~ Martin Luther King Jr

  4. Claire: do you live in the US? I understand bin Laden is far from the end of terrorism, but it also strikes a chord of hope with Americans and, most importantly, brings some form of closure to those who lost loved ones in 9/11. Our troops are over there sacrificing so much, and the least we can do is support them, celebrate with them in their victories and unite as a nation to keep our strength. bin Laden might be just one man, but he stood for much more. Even though terrorism continues daily, justice and peace can find a solid foothold every now and then to remind us that it's not all for nothing.

Anon: I am rejoicing that bin Laden has finally paid for all those innocent lives he took. It's a great quote but I cannot mirror your sentiment.

  5. I am American, but living over seas.

It just scares me that people are acting as though the end of our worries (by our I mean the west mainly UK and US).

I am glad justice has been served, but feel we shouldn't celebrate because I believe that will bring retaliation.

    PS. I love your blog!

  6. I know, it's frightening to think how many more "bin Ladens" there are out there. But if we don't start with one, where do we start, you know? My husband and I spent a year in Scotland not long ago, you definitely see a whole other realm of news and terrorism in another country. It exists everywhere. I guess I just feel like our troops are on their own over there and it probably helps to feel they have their country's support behind their efforts, whatever happens.

And glad you like the blog, happy to know I have fellow American readers across the pond!!
